A Basil & Salt Quick Bite: Cooking voted most popular activity for brain health in America

New research has revealed the most popular cerebral activity in America, according to a recent YouGov poll.

  • A recent YouGov survey reveals cooking and baking voted as the first and second most popular brain exercise, respectively
  • Reading books was voted third most popular cerebral activity
  • Cooking beat puzzles, writing, meditation and exercise to the top spot

Cooking is liked by over 75% of Americans, with only 5% expressing a dislike for the activity. Baby Boomers like to cook in particular, with cooking being enjoyed by 78% of the population, although cooking was ranked most popular across the study involving Generation X, Baby Boomers and Millennials.

Men favored cooking more highly than women did, as men ranked cooking their favorite cerebral activity compared to women, where baking and reading books was more popular than cooking.

Cooking was ranked the most popular cerebral activity over other brain-boosting activities, such as reading books, writing, meditation and exercise.

The Mediterranean diet is reputed as one of the healthiest diets in the world, which includes whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and healthy fats, found in foods like fish. Studies have shown that followers of this diet enjoy benefits for brain health and reduced cognitive decline while aging. Not only this, but research has shown this diet can lower risk of stroke, heart attack, and death from heart disease.

Commenting on the study, a spokesperson from MealDeliveryExperts said: “Preparing and cooking a meal is not just beneficial for our stomach, it’s also an effective way of improving our brain health. Cooking and baking are activities that sharpen our cognitive functions and provide social connections, when we prepare a meal to share with our friends and family. It can be a meditative and therapeutic process for people, as we set aside the demands of our busy lives to focus solely on following a recipe to completion. Americans have found that cooking can be a fun activity that encourages creative expression and nourishes our minds and bodies.”
